An Endoscopy is a procedure performed on an outpatient basis under sedation or “twilight” anesthesia. Under sedation, a camera is inserted through the mouth and passed down the esophagus into the stomach and then into the first portion of the small intestine.

Endoscopy is a useful tool prior to surgery to evaluate for abnormalities of the esophagus, atypical anatomy, inflammation, acid reflux, and ulcers. Biopsies can be taken to evaluate any abnormalities identified.

Endoscopy can also be used after surgery to diagnose and treat various conditions including narrowing of the stomach or intestinal connections, bleeding, staple line leaking, or ulcerations.
