Program Guidelines & Best Practices
- Always warm up with 3-5 minutes of slow walking and gentle stretching
- Cool down with 3-5 minutes of decreased pace and stretching
- Stay well-hydrated before, during, and after walks
- Wear properly fitted athletic shoes with good support
- Track perceived exertion (1-10 scale) and aim for 3-5 during walks
- Rest or decrease intensity if experiencing pain beyond mild discomfort
- Monitor for signs of dehydration, hypoglycemia, or orthostatic hypotension
- Progress at your individual pace - this timeline is flexible
- Consult with your bariatric surgeon before beginning any exercise program
- After 4 weeks, consider adding resistance training 2-3 times per week to help maintain muscle mass
Program Progression Tips
Remember that this is a general guideline. Your personal progress may be faster or slower depending on your pre-surgery fitness level, recovery, and individual factors. Always listen to your body and adjust accordingly. The key to success is consistency rather than intensity.
After completing the 24-week program, maintain your activity level by continuing with regular walks of 30-45 minutes at least 5 days per week, along with strength training 2-3 times weekly for optimal long-term results.
